Pastor’s Corner

Reverend Janet Weiblen

As many of you know, I have volunteered in prisons for twenty years. In my time in Kansas, at Lansing Maximum facility, I met an inmate who has never acknowledged remorse for his crime—because he is innocent. He has served 30 years for a crime that might, by today’s sentencing guidelines, exact a sentence of possibly 15-25 years. His case has been studied for two years by the Washburn University School of Law’s “Wrongful Conviction” class; that class is convinced of this inmate’s innocence.

On a recent Sunday, I asked those present in church to sign a petition that supports clemency by the Governor. The case cannot be re-tried because the State has either lost or destroyed all (ALL) the evidence in the case. I believe I may have inadvertently given the wrong URL at that time. It should be:  http://chn.ge/freeronnie

If you would like to know more about this case, you can go to the website at:  http://blogs.kansas.com/courts/

There are a series of articles by The Wichita Eagle plus some video clips of interviews. At the end of the first article, there is also a link to the petition. I believe this is a matter of Justice. And I would hope our church and all people of good faith believe in Justice.

Your consideration of this matter is appreciated.

Pastor Janet
